Amy Rader and Anderson Smith’s mixed media exhibition, Velare, exploring religion and the sociocultural, psychological, and sociosexual functions of veils, garments and symbols that can make us feel ‘comfortable’ or ‘uncomfortable’ depending on our beliefs. Lack of color emphasizes contrast: modesty versus exposure, and sacred symbols of religion versus the exotic. Black and white can be interpreted as strong ideas of what is ‘right’ or ‘wrong.’ In this series, the shades of gray are where we look beyond the veil and discover through dialogue.

Using multiple mediums, the pieces show the human form through Anderson Smith’s photographic images combined with Amy Rader’s intricate layers of digital collage technique, then delicately stitched with metallic thread.
