Brock Built Plans New Development, Westside Station

westside-station-1A new development, or “mini-town” station, called Westside Station, is being planned by developer Brock Built in West Midtown, Atlanta.

The development includes over 160 homes on Marietta Road, on a former 28-acre truck yard. The Station, which pays homage to the area’s rail and heavy industrial past and present, would stand near the developer’s Dupont Commons neighborhood around the corner from Crest Lawn Cemetery.

The 98 single-family homes will start in the low $400,000s and will range from 2,000 – 5,000 square feet, with 3 – 6 bedrooms. The 65 townhomes have 3-5 bedrooms and will be between 2,200 – 2,900 square feet.

Westside Station is centered around a park and walking trails, with lots of sidewalks and a pool and clubhouse.

Westside’s Whittier Mill is One of Atlanta’s Oldest (and Most Charming) Neighborhoods

westside-whittier-mill-park.pngWhittier Mill is one of Atlanta’s oldest neighborhoods, and, with only 30 acres and about 110 homes, it’s also one of the smallest It’s located in the Westside of Atlanta. The original mill and village were founded in 1895, but only remnants of the mill remain today. The former cotton mill site is now home to the Whittier Mill Village Park. The neighborhood was ranked in the Best Old House Neighborhoods by This Old House in 2011. With it only being a 15 minute commute to downtown, the community lives up to its slogan of “close to the city, yet far.”

The houses around the neighborhood came about to house the Whittier Textile Mill workers after the Lowell, Massachusetts-based Whittier Cotton Mills expanded to the South. The workers were able to rent the neighborhood homes for $1 per week. Then, when the mill grew in 1925, additional homes were built.

The Whittier Mill Village Park has 17 acres of woods, lawn, a children’s playground, and a bocce ball court. Parktoberfest is an annual event every fall, and it raises money for the community park. Other fun events include a progressive dinner, which is held at neighbors homes every New Year’s Eve.

There is a Whittier Mill Village Association, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that has residents and owners of the area defined by the Whittier Mill Village National Register Historic District. The organization aims to improve the Whittier Mill residents’ quality of life and the to preserve the Village as a historic residential neighborhood.

There are 107 original wood-frame cottages still standing, with newer houses being built to resemble the historic ones. Built in the Queen Anne and Georgian styles, the houses feature pitched roofs, pine millwork, and wide front porches, and are set on quiet wooded lots. Prices range from the mid-$100,000s to more than $400,000.

Westside’s Riverside Neighborhood Boasts Active HOA and Events

zercher-homes-westside-riversideRiverside is a very active neighborhood in West Midtown. It is bordered by the Chattahoochee River to the north, Jackson Parkway to the west, Southern Railway train tracks to the south, and Paul Avenue to the east. Bolton Road is the main road and Main Street has a small village shopping and eating area.

There is a good mix of older and new homes, mostly craftsman style. The homes range from $250K – $400K.

The area that is now known as Riverside started as a working plantation, known as the Spink Estate after its owner, James W. Spink. He sold the first lots, which are now occupied by the residence and carriage house at the intersection of Spink St. and Hollywood Rd, in 1892. One of the main streets of the neighborhood is named Spink Street. Spink died suddenly in 1906 and Spink’s widow continued to live in Riverside until her death in 1910. In 1914, the remainder of the Spink Estate was sold as 300 lots and 20 small farms. In time, the farms gave way to more houses. Riverside was annexed into the city of Atlanta in 1952.

It is part of the Atlanta Public School system, which includes Bolton Academy (elementary), Sutton Middle School, and North Atlanta High School.

There are many events such as a Fall Progressive Cocktail party, Riverside Runs Hollywood 5k, and Work Days at the Riverside Park. The HOA is very active.

Westside’s West Highlands by Brock Built Has Home in 240s
